What does home mean to you? It can be a place of refuge, found in smells, tastes and sounds.

Rita, one of our Kitchen Assistants, finds joy cooking for others and is famous for her jollof rice. She is passionate about supporting people who have experienced the asylum system through the universal language of food.

Leaving Nigeria to seek refuge, Rita spent two years volunteering in the Oasis kitchen before she was granted refugee status. Since then she has become a valued member of the kitchen team. In Refuge, a short film by Tom Hughes, she gives an insight into her experience as an asylum seeker in Cardiff and at Oasis.

Oasis aims to be a safe place where people of all backgrounds can come together to build community and networks of support. We want to empower clients to share their stories and experiences which often get lost in discussions about asylum seekers. No one chooses to leave their home but we hope that in Oasis they can find warmth and a feeling of welcome.

Your donations support family’s like Rita’s. Thank you Rita for sharing your story with such strength and to Tom Hughes and the University of South Wales for capturing her story.
